State Postcard Project (Kit!)

Hello Friends,

We're kicking off the State Postcard Project again for 2023, and this time we've got heaps more tools and info to keep it organized. Phew!

The Basics About the State Postcard Project:

1. You send a postcard to lovely humans in a particular region or in each of the 50 states (plus Washington, D.C. and the territories too, if you want to go all out!). ♡
2. The person you send a postcard to, also sends a postcard back to you from their state! ♡♡
3. If you complete the full project, the result is that at the end of the project, you have mailed AND received 50+ postcards(!!).

Skills This Project Supports:

• Addressing mail, like letters and postcards
• Geography, which can be appropriate to the learning level.
  • Beginner learner examples: Find your own state on the map and look at where is is compared to the postcard state. Learn about the four directions. Find the oceans and border states. There's so much you can do!
  • More advanced learner examples: Map out the geographic coordinates and deep dive into mapping and modeling the world, with a focus on the locations where you are sending and receiving mail. Compare locations' economic, socio-political, and environmental dynamics.
• Writing practice as you write short letters to the friends receive a postcard from you.
• Meteorology. Compare the weather in different regions, as well as the natural disasters from one place to another.
  • Love Note: This topic is a favorite in our household! Which states are most likely to be hit by tornadoes? Tsunamis? Hurricanes? Landslides? Floods? Earthquakes? Nor'easters?? ETC.
• History. Perfectly pair this project with a USA history study!
• Social Studies Galore!
  • Use the postcards as an anchor to complete mini studies on each of the USA states and regions.
  • Connect with residents of different areas and learn more about the varying jobs and lifestyles.

But aside from the skills... this project is fun, wholesome, and interesting! We love that it brings LIFE to the studies. If you can't travel to each and every state right now, why not have each state travel to you?!

We have some tools to help make this project easier for you! Keep it organized so the level of surprise is fun, educational, and manageable.
